Student Discipline Working Group elects co-chairs at first meeting

The first meeting of the Student Discipline Working Group was Thursday, July 14.

The Minnesota Legislature has charged this group with review and analysis of the substance, application, and effect of the Pupil Fair Dismissal Act. The group is charged with making recommendations to the House and Senate Education Committees by February 1, 2017, for improvement of student disciplinary policies, practices, and procedures.

MSBA is represented on this group by Cathy Miller, MSBA’s Director of Legal and Policy Services.

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) hosted the meeting and provided an overview of the legislative charge to the group, the Pupil Fair Dismissal Act, and the discipline data available on MDE’s website.

The following three co-chairs were selected by the group: Mark French from the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association; Marika Pfefferkorn from the Minnesota Education Equity Partnership; and Lupe Thornhill, a student, from the Minnesota Youth Council.

The group’s next meeting is Tuesday, August 23.
