Call to Action: Tell House elections committee to advance elections bill

Call to Action!

MSBA, along with other education associations, has been working this session on A red button with the words "Take action" on itlegislation to repeal a costly election law requiring a special election in the case of a school board vacancy. New language provides for school boards to appoint an individual. This provision is included in both the House and Senate Omnibus Election Bills.

During a recent House Government Operations and Elections Policy Committee hearing, a series of unfortunate events occurred and the House bill was tabled. This new proposal is a key piece of legislation for school board members and the bill will not move forward unless there is resolution.

Today, please contact the following individuals (via an email, a phone call, or leave a message with their legislative assistant) and please encourage them to move the House Omnibus Elections Bill forward:

Dear Representative _________________:

I am contacting you today regarding the House Omnibus Election Bill, in particular, the school board vacancy section. As a school board member, there is a need to repeal the current law and allow school boards make an appointment when a seat is vacated.

Besides being a governing issue with some districts having to wait months to hold an election, the cost of special elections in both time and financial resources is burdensome and takes away from public school students’ education.

I ask you to work together, resolve this issue and move the House Omnibus Election bill forward.

Thank you for your service and your anticipated attention to this issue.

Respectfully,

(Your Name, Title, School District)
