MSBA continues its Top 10 list of items we think will have the biggest impact on schools. Starting this week — and running Monday through Friday for the next couple of weeks — we’ll fill you in on our Top 10. And if anyone wants the entire analysis, just click on the MSBA Legislative Summary link below.

No. 9: School district flexibility

Here are just a few of the laws passed that empower local decision-making:

  • For 2015-16, schools may begin on Sept. 1
  • Flexible use of staff development revenue for principal and teacher development and evaluation and teacher mentoring
  • Expanded flexibility on teacher licensure, such as allowing a candidate to submit a portfolio, granting 2-year provisional licenses or issuing up to four 1-year temporary teaching licenses to a qualified candidate who has not yet passed a board skills test.

There are many more options for flexibility that you can learn about in MSBA’s 2015  Legislative Summary. Take a look at pages 6 and 7.
