MSBA at the Capitol — House Ways and Means Committee OKs teacher licensure bill

The House Ways and Means Committee approved an amended version of Rep. Jenifer Loon’s teacher licensure bill (HF 2) on Monday.

The bill will now be re-referred to the General Register for a vote before the full House of Representatives.

The bill was originally scheduled for a full House vote last Thursday, but was sent back to the Ways and Means Committee after a last fiscal note arrived that morning, suggesting the proposal could cost close to $1 million.

The bill is multifaceted, but one of the most notable provisions calls for the end of the “last in, first out” (LIFO) approach to determining teacher layoffs.

Before approving the bill, the committee OK’d Rep. Loon’s amendment that removed some references to data practices laws.

MSBA will keep you posted when the bill is scheduled for its vote in the House.
